My Everyday Camera Gear

Several people have asked me questions about my camera gear & equipment, so I thought it’d be nice to share what I use most often on an everyday basis. Hope this helps!

My Baby

Nikon D3200 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR

My DSLR itself is a Nikon D3200. It’s a nice, basic starter camera that I received 2 years ago. This model is a cropped sensor camera (as opposed to a full-frame – read about the difference here). Though I like it and it feels comfortable in my hand, I now wish that I got one with a swivel screen and would looove to upgrade to a full-frame. But since I don’t have a couple thousand $$$ to drop…some day! For now, I try to work with what I have. On days when I wish for what I do not have, I am forced to remind  myself that it’s not all about the equipment but the composition.

The Glass

Along with the camera body, my DSLR kit also came with 2 zoom lenses, 18-55mm and 55-200mm. The one that I use on an every day basis is the 18-55mm lens.

It zooms allll the way out (at 18mm), which appeals to me since I love taking wide, landscape shots, but it can also zoom in (to 55mm) so that I could make a portrait if I wanted to.

The other lens that I use quite often is my Nikon 35mm prime lens.

A prime lens doesn’t zoom in and out, so it’s smaller and lighter. It also has a larger maximum aperture (f/1.8) so it can let in more light. Thus, I almost always use this one in low-light situations (indoors, night photography). Another advantage of this larger aperture is that I can blur the background, which comes in handy during portrait shoots.

Of course I have to look stylish when I’m toting around my camera! Last summer, I decided to invest in a Jo Totes Siena bag.

To me, it was a worthwhile investment because it’s my go-to camera bag when I’m out and about. It can fit my camera+ lens, wallet, phone, chapstick, and even a small water bottle! I’m just sad that I banged/scratched it so much from all the use! You can see me wear this bag in just about every picture…

That’s it! Those are my everyday photography essentials. I tote my camera & shiz around in the Siena bag and may lug around an extra lens, depending on what I want to shoot. So, readers!
